Summer is to soda marketers as Christmas season is to retailers: There's a good reason to buy, but nobody wants to take it for granted. So Coke and rival Pepsi-Cola will spend multimillions to make sure they do. (For more, see special Soda package below.) JOURNAL TO HAVE INTERACTIVE ADS: Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal, and telephone giant BellSouth Corp. said Monday they have developed an interactive system to give readers more information about advertised products and services. Dow Jones and BellSouth will use BellSouth's voice messaging system to give Journal readers access to information about products or services advertised in that paper. ADS LIST TOLL-FREE NUMBER: The Wall Street Journal's "Reader Service Line" is already in operation for readers getting regional editions of the Journal in the Southeast and northern California. A toll-free number and advertiser codes are listed in ads for participating products or services so readers can call to get more information and possibly leave an address or number so the advertiser can send material. COLT 45 PREMIUM COMES OUT: Brewer G. Heileman, which last year was forced to withdraw high-alcohol malt liquor PowerMaster, has unveiled Colt 45 Premium. The new brew features the same label design as PowerMaster. But "it's a different product than PowerMaster," says Heileman's Randy Smith. Regulators say the PowerMaster name advertised the malt liquor's strength. The new name was approved in January. ABC DELAYS NEWSMAGAZINE: ABC has been planning a new magazine to air against CBS' "60 Minutes," but it is not on the network's fall schedule. With Forrest Sawyer as anchor, the new, as-yet-untitled show was to begin airing this summer, but it's been delayed until January. "It was going to be a stretch," says ABC News Vice President Joanna Bistany. "But we thought we could do it this summer." ARNOLDS GET WHAT THEY WANT: Tom Arnold's "The Jackie Thomas Show" didn't make the new ABC fall schedule, but it will air in the post-"Roseanne" time slot, Tuesday at 9:30 EDT:PDT, by January. Executive producer Roseanne Arnold, Tom's wife, had lobbied ABC Entertainment President Bob Iger hard for the time slot. She told Iger that if she didn't get the slot, she didn't want to be on the schedule. MAJOR APPLIANCES SELLING: Showroom traffic is up about 18% for major appliances from last spring, says Fred Crosby, who sells furniture and major appliances in Cleveland. That could help generate an increase in advertising. "We want to be aggressive with our advertising so that we are in the front of consumers' minds when they are going to shop," says Ann Collier, spokeswoman for Circuit City Stores. MAGAZINE TARGETS RICH MEN: A new quarterly magazine aimed at affluent men is set for a September launch. Cigar Aficionado focuses on cigars as well as dining, entertainment world travel and the arts, says editor and publisher Marin R. Shanken. It promises a 100,000 circulation. Ad rates are $8,160 for a black and white page and $9,600 for a color page. The cover price is $3.95. ASICS ADS FEATURE TRAINING: Shoemaker ASICS Tiger Corp.'s new print and TV ads, unveiled Monday, will have the overall theme "The Will to Win Means Nothing Without the Will to Prepare." ASICS' TV campaign features athletes performing their day-to-day training rituals in preparation for competition. ASICS will run print ads in Sports Illustrated, Runner's World, G.O., Cosmopolitan and Outside Magazine. SPECIAL PACKAGE ON SODA: PEPSI OFFERS DISCOUNT CARDS: Pepsi-Cola will give away nearly 40 million Gotta Have It cards in packages of soda and through the mail. The cards offer discounts on merchandise including Reebok sneakers and Blockbuster video rentals. Pepsi says the promotion is mostly aimed at teens. "If you can win them over during the summer, you may have them for life," says Pepsi brand director Doug Kellam. ADS STILL AIMED AT OLDER MARKET: In addition to going after teens, Pepsi-Cola is continuing its pursuit of older drinkers by offering discounts with Avis, Continental, Norwegian Cruise Lines and MCI long-distance service. Pepsi is also deliberately including older people in its current TV ads . CRAWFORD BACK PLUGGING PEPSI: Cindy Crawford will be back in Pepsi ads this summer. She is in spots pushing the Gotta Have It card. In one, Crawford takes a cruise and innocently thinks she's getting special attention from the male staff because she's carrying the Pepsi card. As Sprite spokesman Macaulay Culkin would say, I don't think so. COKE'S PITCH TO STAY THE SAME: Coke won't give details of its summer promotion. It will be similar to last summer's promotion. Consumers can win CDs or cassettes of music performed by Randy Travis, Natalie Cole, INXS and others during NBC's broadcast of the Summer Olympics. Coke is a worldwide Olympics sponsor.
