British Open champion Nick Faldo, who bogeyed two of the first five holes, finished at 5-under-par for a 68 to tie Brian Claar and Jay Don Blake. Ray Floyd and Kel Nagle held the course record of 68 set at the 1965 U.S. Open. KING TIED FOR DU MAURIER LEAD: Betsy King, who said Wednesday she wasn't at the peak of her game, shot 5-under-par 67 Thursday to share the lead in the du Maurier Classic in Winnipeg, the final major women's championship of the year. King, who had five birdies and no bogeys at St. Charles Country Club, is tied with Meg Mallon, Michelle Mackall, Sherri Steinhauer and Kelly Robbins. TRAGEDY HITS ALLISON FAMILY: Clifford Allison, 27, son of 1983 Winston Cup champion Bobby Allison and younger brother of NASCAR star Davey Allison, died Thursday after a crash in practice at Michigan International Speedway. It was the most recent tragedy for the racing family. Bobby Allison had to give up racing after a wreck four years ago, and Davey was seriously injured in a crash last month. HUMPHRIES JOINS CHARGERS: Stan Humphries leaped from the bottom of the depth chart almost to the top. Thursday, the Washington Redskins traded their fourth-string quarterback to the San Diego Chargers for a fourth-round pick that becomes a No. 3 if Humphries takes half the offensive snaps.
