NHL PLAYERS ON STRIKE:
   National Hockey League rinks were quiet Wednesday night after 
players voted 560-4 earlier to reject the owners' latest contract 
offer and strike. Three games were canceled Wednesday. Negotiators 

met Wednesday night, but NHL President John Ziegler said the talks 

were only exploratory. "We are getting very close to an impasse," 
said Ziegler. The season was scheduled to end Sunday.
    
VIRGINIA WINS NIT:
   Virginia won the National Invitation Tournament final 81-76 in 
overtime over Notre Dame Wednesday in New York. Bryant Stith led 
the Cavaliers with 24 points. Notre Dame's Elmer Bennett, who 
scored a career-high 39, sent the game into overtime with a 
three-point basket with three seconds to go. In the consolation 
game, Utah beat Florida 81-78.
    
MASSIMINO TAKES UNLV JOB:
   Rollie Massimino agreed Wednesday to leave his job as 
basketball coach at Villanova to take over the vacant coaching job 

at Nevada-Las Vegas, succeeding Jerry Tarkanian. Massimino 
accepted a five-year contract worth more than $2 million to take 
over the scandal-plagued program. "I am looking for a positive 
image, a positive situation," said Massimino. "We're looking to go 

forward."
