But Jimmy Connors, playing in his 20th Wimbledon, lost to Mexico's Luis Herrera 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. Weather reports call for "more sunny spells" Tuesday. TOMLIN WINS 10TH GAME: Randy Tomlin became the National League's second 10-game winner as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2. TWINS DOWN ANGELS: The Minnesota Twins beat the California Angels 2-0 Monday behind John Smiley's seventh straight win. Smiley improved to 7-3. VINCENT MEETS WITH MICHAEL: Commissioner Fay Vincent met Monday with New York Yankees general manager Gene Michael and his attorney. "I believe he (Michael) answered the questions to the best of his ability and certainly honestly," Vincent said. Vincent is investigating whether George Steinbrenner violated an agreement that forbids him from being directly involved in club business. NEW LEADERS FOR NHL: There was a changing of the guard Monday in the NHL. Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall was elected chairman on the NHL Board of Governors, replacing Bill Wirtz. Also, Gil Stein was appointed to replace John Ziegler as president until a commissioner is appointed. Wirtz had been chairman for 18 of the last 20 years, with Ziegler the CEO for 15 years. BARNES CAN COMPETE: Randy Barnes, the world recordholder in the shot put serving a two-year drug ban, was ordered into the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials by a West Virginia state court judge Monday. The U.S. federation (TAC) will oppose the decision. In qualifying action, PattiSue Plumer edged Shelly Steely to win the 3,000 meters and Kamy Keshmiri won the discus competition. WASHINGTON SUES TYSON: Desiree Washington, the woman Mike Tyson was convicted of raping, filed a civil suit against him Monday, seeking unspecified damages for assault, battery, false imprisonment and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Also, a prisoner advocacy group asked for his release on "shock probation" because prison employees are exploiting and profiting from Tyson. TOUR CONTINUES: Belgium's Wilfried Nelisson won a time bonus Monday on the sixth leg of the Tour of Switzerland in Payerne. A crowded finish left the top of the standings unchanged for the second consecutive day. The 150-mile stage ended with 101 riders clocking the same time, the fourth mass finish in the event. Giorgio Furlan of Italy is atop the leaderboard with a 31-second edge over Gianni Bugno. PEELER FREE ON BOND: Anthony Peeler, Big Eight player of the year and an expected high pick in Wednesday's NBA draft, was free on $500 bond Monday after being arrested on assault charges for the second time in a month. Lanae Brown of Kansas City charged that Peeler punched her in the face and wrestled her to the ground. WITT DENIES REPORTS: Katarina Witt, the two-time Olympic champion figure skater, denied news reports she provided reports to Stasi, the former East German secret police, during travels abroad. "As a top sports figure I could not avoid the Stasi, but I declined to work for them," Witt told the Dresdener Morgenpost. NASCAR TESTING AT INDY: NASCAR testing continued Monday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Monday. "I think we could put on a heckuva show here," reigning Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt said after the first of two days of testing. Thunderstorms could disrupt Tuesday's schedule, which includes an "unofficial" 15-lap race by nine drivers. DENMARK UPSETS THE NETHERLANDS: Tournament substitute Denmark upset the Netherlands 5-4 in a penalty shootout in the semifinals at the European Championship at Goteborg, Sweden, Monday.
