LAORETTI TAKES SENIOR OPEN: Larry Laoretti, who has spent his adult life in golf, finally got his reward Sunday when he won the U.S. Senior Open. Laoretti, 53, shot a 68 Sunday to finish at 275 at Saucon Valley Country Club. He made 11 consecutive pars before rushing to victory with birdies on the 12th, 16th and 18th holes. Jim Colbert was second, with a 69-279. MANSELL RECORDS GRAND PRIX WIN: Britain's Nigel Mansell set off a near-riot by delirious British fans as he drove his Williams-Renault to victory in Sunday's British Grand Prix. With 28 career Grand Prix victories, Mansell is third in the Formula One record books behind Alain Prost (44 wins) and Ayrton Senna (34). Mansell also topped Jackie Stewart (27 wins) as the most successful F1 driver in Great Britain's history. LEMOND TRYING TO MOVE UP: U.S. cyclist Greg LeMond is poised to make a move toward the top of the Tour De France leader board in Monday's ninth stage. LeMond, along with world champion Gianni Bugno of Italy and defending titlist Miguel Indurain of Spain, should push leader Pascal Lino in the 41-mile time trial around Luxembourg. Lino, leader the past six days, leads No. 10 LeMond by 4 minutes, 29 seconds. NFL TRIAL TAKES RECESS: The NFL free-agency trial is recessed for two weeks, another chance for the out-of-court settlement that has eluded player and owners for five years to be worked out. The trial will likely resume July 27 in federal court in Minneapolis unless a settlement is reached in the interim. The recess was prompted by U.S. District Judge David Doty's commitment to attend a judicial conference. FALCONS OFFERING DEION MORE: The Atlanta Falcons are willing to bend a bit more to lure Deion Sanders away from the Atlanta Braves. Two weeks ago, the Falcons offered Sanders a $1 million bonus to make Monday's start of pre-camp, or $800,000 if he arrives for the first day of regular workouts July 25. The Falcons say they have extended the deadline for Sanders to get the $800,000 to Aug. 1. KING WINS PLAYOFF, PHAR-MOR: Betsy King won a four-way playoff when she rolled in an 8-foot putt on the first extra hole Sunday in the rain-delayed LPGA Phar-Mor at Youngstown in Vienna, Ohio. King finished 54 holes at 7-under-par 209, tied with Meg Mallon, Beth Daniel and Donna Andrews. Mallon was 8 under going into the 18th hole but bogeyed after hitting her tee shot into the rough. KEEFE 1ST NO. 1 PICK TO SIGN: Adam Keefe Sunday became the first of 27 first-round NBA draft picks to sign a contract this season. Keefe, the No. 10 pick by the Atlanta Hawks, practiced Sunday evening with rookies and free agents. The 6-foot-9 Stanford product has a five-year agreement for a reported $7 million. Other first-round picks will likely wait until No. 1 Shaquille O'Neal signs with the Orlando Magic. JOHNSON EARNS THIRD NHRA WIN: Joe Amato (Top Fuel), ChuckEtchells (Funny Car) and Warren Johnson (Pro Stock) claimed victories Sunday at the National Hot Rod Association's Mopar Parts Summernationals at Englishtown, N.J.Johnson, of Duluth, Ga., recorded his third win of the season and took over the Pro Stock points lead when he defeated Rickie Smith. FERNANDEZ TOPPLES GARRISON: Mary Joe Fernandez and Zina Garrison are Olympic teammates and tennis double partners. Sunday, the two were opponents, and Fernandez will have bragging rights in Barcelona. She beat second-seeded Garrison 6-4, 6-4 to win the Hall of Fame Invitational. In the men's final, defending champion Bryan Shelton beat Alex Antonitsch, 6-4, 6-4. GRAF TO LEAD GERMAN TEAM: Steffi Graf, fresh from a Wimbledon championship, will try to bring Germany its first Federation Cup since 1987. The competition, the women's equivalent of the Davis Cup, begins Monday in Frankfurt, Germany. Germany, top seed in the 32-country field, begins against New Zealand. The USA team is seeded sixth and begins play against Great Britain. ALLISON MAY MAKE A COMEBACK: Bobby Allison, who has not driven on the NASCAR circuit since suffering serious head injuries in a crash four years ago at Pocono Speedway, is considering a return to auto racing. Allison, 54, said Sunday his health has improved and that he could return to racing as soon as the Sept. 27 Goody's 500 at Martinsville, Va. "It might just be for one more time," Allison said. RIOT BREAKS OUT IN RUGBY MATCH: Angered by a referee's call, fans of a mixed-race rugby team attacked white players on the opposing side, forcing officials to call off Saturday's match in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa, the South African Press Association said.
