PRICE WINS PGA TITLE: Nick Price shot a 1-under-par 70-278 Sunday to pull away with the PGA Championship in St. Louis. Price's hooked tee shot at 15 in recording his only bogey. He offset it with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole. Third-round leader Gene Sauers led by two after his birdie at No. 4, but found the water at the 195-yard sixth and was five-over the rest of the way for 75. NAVRATILOVA EASILY BEATS SELES: Martina Navratilova defeated No. 1 Monica Seles 6-4, 6-2 Sunday to win the $350,000 Virginia Slims of Los Angeles. Navratilova needed less than an hour to hand Seles her second humbling defeat in slightly more than a month. Seles still holds a 7-6 career edge. SAMPRAS WINS ATP CHAMPIONSHIP: Pete Sampras held off a determined challenge by Ivan Lendl Sunday to win the $1.4 million Thriftway ATP Championship at Mason, Ohio, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Sampras travels this week to Indianapolis to defend his U.S. Hardcourts title. Sampras lacked the aggressiveness in his earlier matches but sailed through No. 5 seed Petr Korda in the quarterfinals and No. 2 Stefan Edberg in the semifinals. 49ERS DOWN REDSKINS: Mike Cofer's last-second field goal gave the San Francisco 49ers a 17-15 NFL preseason victory against the Washington Redskins Sunday in London. MANSELL WINS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP: Britain's Nigel Mansell clinched his first Formula One championship by finishing second to Brazil's Ayrton Senna in Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite 29 F1 wins, it is the first championship for Mansell, who clinched the title with five races left on the 16-race schedule. He has eight victories this season. Senna scored his 35th career victory and second of the year. GANT GOES ON: Harry Gant, stretching his fuel mileage to the limit, won Sunday's NASCAR Champion Spark Plug 400 at Brooklyn, Mich. Gant, 52, extended his record as the oldest driver to win a Winston Cup race. He averages 143.056 mph with his Oldmobile, beating Darell Waltrip's Chevrolet by 4.94 seconds. RICE STANDOFF: San Francisco's Jerry Rice reportedly is asking for a four-year, $15 million guaranteed contract. But 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo, vocal about cutting his team's lavish spending, says fans should be prepared for an entire season without Rice. Team President Carmen Policy, who believes Rice can be signed before the Sept. 6 opening game against the New York Giants, plans to resume talks this week. SCOUT'S HONOR: Head football coaches at 97 NCAA Division I-A schools reportedly have said they will follow pro scouting access guidelines set forth by the American Football Coaches Association.
