REFEREES UPSET BY REPLACEMENTS: NBA referees, seeking a larger share of the league's prosperity, are upset that the NBA is hiring replacements for next season in case no labor agreement is reached. NBA general counsel Gary Bettman acknowledged that the league is in the process of hiring replacement officials, but insisted the NBA is only protecting itself against a strike. IRISH PLAYER WILL COMPETE: Monty Williams, a former Notre Dame basketball player barred from competition because of a heart condition, was cleared to play, the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune reported Tuesday. Williams, of Forest Heights, Md., won a starting role as a freshman but was diagnosed two years ago with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle.
