In the other Patrick semifinal, the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers 7-3 to tie the series 1-1. Claude Lemieux scored two goals for the Devils. It was the Rangers' worst loss of the season. CANADIENS TAKE 2-0 LEAD: The Montreal Canadiens took a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven Adams Division semifinal series with Hartford, downing the Whalers 5-2 Tuesday. In the other Adams semifinal, Adam Oates scored off a faceoff at 11:14 of overtime as the Boston Bruins beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 to even their series at 1-1. METS DOWN CARDINALS: Dwight Gooden improved to 2-1 with his longest outing this season as the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 Tuesday. Gooden, coming off rotator cuff surgery last September, pitched seven strong innings. MORE PLAYERS INJURED: The line outside the Cincinnati Reds training room grew longer Tuesday as pitcher Jose Rijo was put on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed tendon in his right elbow. Five other players have sustained injuries for the Reds already this season. Also, Chicago White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his right knee Tuesday. GGO COURSE SOAKED: Heavy rains closed the course for this weekend's K mart Greater Greensboro Open Tuesday and put Wednesday's pro-am in jeopardy. The forecast is for clearing for Thursday's opening round, but the 6,958-yard Forest Oaks course has taken a lot of water.
