Defenseman Chris Chelios had a goal and two assists to give the Blackhawks a 3-0 first-period lead. Game 2 is Thursday in Pittsburgh. PORTLAND WINS IN OT: The Portland Trail Blazers took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven NBA Western Conference final with a 127-121 overtime win Tuesday. Game 6 is Thursday night in Salt Lake City, where the Jazz are undefeated (8-0) in this season's playoffs. A 10-3 Blazers run in overtime put the game away for Portland, who got 29 points from Jerome Kersey and 24 from Clyde Drexler. BULLS HOPE FOR ADVANTAGE: The Chicago Bulls are looking to take advantage of the home-court advantage Wednesday when the NBA Eastern Conference final resumes. "We played all season to get the home court, and now we have to make use of it," said Bulls guard Michael Jordan. The best-of-seven series is tied at 2-2. The last time they played at home, the Bulls were held to 81 points in Game 2, won by Cleveland. TIGERS DOWN ROYALS: Bill Gullickson (6-2) won his sixth straight game Tuesday as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 8-1. Rob Deer hit a two-run home run, his 14th, and Mark Carreon hit a three-run shot, his fifth, for the Tigers. BRONCOS, DOLPHINS SWAP BACKS: The Denver Broncos traded running back Bobby Humphrey to the Miami Dolphins Tuesday for Sammie Smith. Humphrey held out for 97 days last season and only carried 11 times for 33 yards the rest of the season. "I'm happy, I'm excited, and I want to play ball," said Humphrey, who had two straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons prior to last year. RYDER CUP QUESTIONS: U.S. Ryder Cup players will be offered automatic berths to European PGA Tour events next season in exchange for more places in major U.S. tournaments. "We are hoping to have discussions with the PGA of America on the matter," Ken Schofield, executive director of the European Tour, said Tuesday. Schofield was critical of U.S. tour regulars for playing a recent non-tour event in Paris. ST. JAMES LOOKS FOR PROGRAM: Lyn St. James, who was named the top rookie in the Indy 500, says she hopes to put together an IndyCar program with owner Dick Simon that will allow her to run a full schedule next year. "There are a lot of guys out there with a lot more experience than me, and I don't want to just show up here or there (this year) and lose what I've gained," she says. ANDRETTI HAS MORE SURGERY: Jeff Andretti had a third surgery Tuesday at Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital for injuries sustained in Sunday's Indianapolis 500. The exploratory surgery revealed no tendon damage in the right leg and Andretti was listed in fair condition, hospital spokesman Jon White said. Mario Andretti and rookie Jimmy Vasser, who also crashed, were listed in good condition. S. AFRICA TO INCREASE TEAM: South Africa has won a battle to increase the size of the team for its historic return to the Olympics. The number of athletes and officials going to Barcelona will "go into three figures," said Sam Ramsamy, South Africa's Olympic Committee chairman. IOC officials wanted to limit the team to 68.
