The mood around Seattle was euphoric. Said Bob Hartley, spokesman for the new ownership: "It's a festive feeling. You can hardly take a step without getting a thumbs up." VINCENT SCOLDS OWNERS: Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent ended owners' summer meetings Thursday with a speech critical of their "undistinguished behavior." Vincent told owners to end to their bickering and in-fighting and urged them to end the discord if they hope to solve baseball's problems. He said, "Baseball has no chance without unity, and it seemed to me ownership has the most at stake." ORIOLES TOP TIGERS: The Baltimore Orioles scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-5 Thursday. Baltimore won for the fourth time in five games, while Detroit lost for the fourth time in its last five. Joe Orsulak hit his first home run of the season and Alan Mills (3-1) got the win in relief. In other AL games: California 4, Chicago 0; Toronto 4, Boston 0. NBA FINALS RESUME FRIDAY: The Portland Trail Blazers' win Wednesday over Chicago in the NBA Finals guaranteed the longest Finals in four years. The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2. None of the last three Finals has gone past five games. Game 5 is Friday night at Memorial Coliseum (9 EDT, NBC) in Portland. Game 6 (7 p.m. EDT, NBC), and if necessary, Game 7, will be at Chicago Stadium Sunday and Wednesday. MILLER UPSETS ZMESKAL AGAIN: Shannon Miller, 15, won the compulsory round of the U.S. women's Olympic Gymnastic Trials Thursday, beating national and world champion Kim Zmeskal. Miller also edged Zmeskal in the compulsories of the U.S. championships in mid-May. The top seven finishers at the trials advance with injured Betty Okino to an Olympic training camp next month. Six will make up the U.S. team in Barcelona. MARQUEZ STOPS ALLEN: World light middleweight champion Raul Marquez of Houston stopped Robert Allen of the Marines in the third round Thursday at the Olympic boxing trials in Worcester, Mass. Allen, 23, took a standing eight-count after Marquez, 20, wobbled him, then was floored with a right-left combination. The referee halted the bout at 2:40 when Marquez hurt Allen with a right. ZIEGLER'S TENURE TO END: National Hockey League owners will hold a teleconference Friday to finalize a financial settlement that ends John Ziegler's 15-year reign as league president. Because of a league-enforced gag rule, it is unknown whether Ziegler will stay on until a successor is named. The leading candidate to fill the post is Washington Capitals President Dick Patrick. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NAMED: The U.S. women's Olympic basketball team, consisting of 11 professional players and one high school coach, was named Thursday. The U.S. team is looking for its third straight Olympic gold medal. "A lot of people out there are not aware of the ability and the level that these women play the game," said Olympic coach Theresa Grentz. SNEAD LEADS SENIOR EVENT: J.C. Snead, 52, still looking for his first win on the Senior PGA Tour, shot a course-record 7-under-par 65 Thursday to take a one-shot lead over Tommy Aaron in the $1 million Senior Players Championship at TPC of Michigan. "I've been playing too long to get excited about one round," Snead said of his bogey-free day. "Anytime I shoot 65, something must be wrong." EDBERG, SAMPRAS WIN: Top-seeded Stefan Edberg and No. 2 Pete Sampras survived a day of upsets Thursday to reach the fourth round of the Queen's Club grass-court tournament in London. Edberg got past Wally Masur 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4. Sampras edged Gianluca Pozzi 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. HANAUER SETS RECORDS: Chip Hanauer, driving Miss Budweiser, set a world record during qualifying Thursday for the Budweiser APBA Gold Cup on the Detroit River. During his first qualifying appearance Thursday morning, Hanauer drove his speedboat to a two-lap (five miles) average speed of 168.937 mph - setting three records along the way, including a world lap speed record. TAC TO DISCUSS REYNOLDS: The Athletics Congress' executive committee will hold a teleconference Friday to discuss whether suspended 400-meter recordholder Butch Reynolds can compete in the U.S. Olympic trials.
