Like most fashion trends, of course, the look isn't actually new. Its soft, smoky eyes and well-defined red lips are straight from the sexy, sophisticated '40s when it was epitomized by movie queens like Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford. And makeup is so improved these days that it can look better than theirs did. (For more, see special Makeup package below.) TIME SHARES ARE ON THE RISE: Time share's rebirth as a vacation industry - a getaway with a seven-year mortgage and tax deductible interest payments - has led to a new boom in sales. A study by the American Resort Development Association found 1.4 million U.S. time-share owners - up 18% since 1990. The average time-share purchase has risen from $9,000 per week in '91 to $9,500 this year. URBAN AREAS TO SEE GROWTH: There are other developments on the horizon: More time shares in urban areas, from Manhattan to San Francisco; more resorts providing complete vacation arrangements such as tickets to local attractions, sightseeing and other hotel concierge-type services. Marriott, Disney and others already are going this way. SHOPPING CENTER GROWTH SLOWS: Fewer shopping centers are being built. The International Council of Shopping Centers reports 552 shopping centers were built last year. That's down from more than 1,008 in 1990 and 1,510 in 1989. The number of new shopping centers being built is expected to decrease again this year. BACK INJURIES ARE COSTING MORE: Costs from work-related lower-back injuries rose to about $16 billion in 1990 and are expected to hit $40 billion by 2000, according to Ted Braun, director-ergonomics services for Liberty Mutual. Braun, addressing the insurer's Risk Management Forum in Chicago Tuesday, blamed "unrestrained medical costs, excessive legal disputes and fraud" for the rising costs. YOUTHS ARE PLAYING DEADLY GAME: Youths are getting involved in a deadly game of "knockout." Three Cambrige, Mass., youths have been charged in the death of a college student killed during the game. Goal: Knock an unsuspecting victim unconscious with a single punch. If the blow doesn't knock the victim out, the assailant's companions beat the puncher. DOGS CHEWING ON PIG EARS: The latest wrinkle in pet chews is the pig's ear - smoked and cured and available either flat or puffed. The idea is that since dogs don't floss, they need something to chew on to clean their teeth. The ears serve the same function as rawhide chews. EARS SATISFY `HUMAN NEED': Pigs aren't being slaughtered to satisfy a canine craving, as elephants are hunted by those who covet their ivory tusks. The ears are a by-product of the "human needs industry" (ham, ribs, bacon, pig's feet) and come from USDA-inspected meat plants. Prices for the ears range from 99 cents for one flat ear, which looks like a piece of rawhide, to $2.99 for a package of two ears. KIDS CAN HUGG-A-PLANET: Marketers are trying to get kids to love the planet. A new line of Hugg-A-Planet toys teaches children to love the world and the universe in which they live. The line of soft huggable globes (Earth, Mars, Halley's Comet and a night sky sphere featuring 88 constellations) won the Parents' Choice Classic Award. They cost $12.99. SPECIAL PACKAGE ON MAKEUP: CLEAN AND NATURAL LOOK SHINES: The '40s face goes well with fall's long hemlines, but just as clothes designers don't agree about skirt lengths, makeup gurus offer some alternative looks, too. A couple of the best: A continuation of the clean and natural look we've seen the last two years, and a return of the '70s mod look with shimmery eye shadows, lip glosses and liquid eyeliner. `90210' SETS THE TREND: "It's the whole `90210' thing - the California look," says Jody Godby Perry of Glamour magazine, referring to the popular TV show "Beverly Hills 90210." "The blond hair is really not that important. But the naturalness is very big. It's a very fresh, clean look" with a sultry edge for fall. It involves red lipstick and alluring eyes. NATURAL LOOK NOT UNANIMOUS: But makeup artist Lisa Marie Lore'n says the fresh-faced look is old news. "The clean, natural look is dead," says Lore'n, of Tamara Institute de Beaute in Farmington Hills, Mich. "The big thing is the manicured eyebrow with brow pencil or dark shadow. Brows for fall need a finished look." For mod eyes, Lore'n suggests a shimmery shadow on the brow bone in silver or pink. EYE SHADOW SUGGESTED ON MOUTH: The mod mouth requires some fancy facework. Using a lip brush, outline the mouth with a dark brown eye shadow. This will define the lips and make them more generous if need be. It will also prevent lipstick feathering and bleeding. Then apply a pale lip color, maybe in a frosted shade, or nude lip gloss for a finished look. If using a pale lipstick, put lip gloss over the upper lip. (End of package.)
