The September 1990 issue of Air Force Magazine had an article entitled "What They Really Called Them" which had a large number of unofficial names for aircraft. Here are some of my favorites: B-52 BUFF (Big Ugly Fat ..... Fellow) A-7 SLUF (Short Little Ugly ..... Fellow) B-66 Sooie! (It was a hog on takeoff) F-16 Lawn Dart, Viper, Electric Jet, Little Hummer F-105 Lead Sled, Squash Bomber (if all else failed, turn off the engine and squash the target) AC-47 Puff the Magic Dragon, Spooky, Dragon F-111 Aardvark, Switchblade, Widow-Maker, Flying Edsel, Swinger EF-111 Sparkvark B-1 Bone (from B-one) C-141 T-Tailed Mountain Magnet T-37 Converter (converts fuel into noise) B-26 Flying Prostitute (it had no visible means of support) F-104 Missile with a Man in It A-10 SLAT (Slow, Low, Aerial Target) C-5 Fat Albert O-2 Duck (from the way the landing gear folds), Suck and Blow (from the push, pull engine arrangements) AV-8 Scarier And for F-117 fans: The Black Jet, Nighthawk, Frisbee, F-19 (Wobbly Goblin is purely a media creation) Enough for now. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Kaser Email: davek@lobby.ti.com Texas Instruments Incorporated Phone: (214) 952-4675 2501 W.
