For some period of time now, several members of various Service-area teams have had to devote large amounts of time to cleaning up the ftp area on net-dist, IS's central network software distribution point. Problems encountered have ranged from mislabeled software, random files appearing in directories, and improper permissions set on files. This last has extreme potential for legal problems given the increasing amount of licensed software we distribute via net-dist, such as Eudora, MacOS, SAP, Dr. Solomon, to name a few. Today's batch of problems, which have prompted this note, include mislabled versions of Eudora, improper permissions on some Eudora files and a Cricket Draw data file appearing in the Macintosh Eudora directory. We feel the major problem is the large number of people who have access to make software available. This was done in the past due to concerns that it took too long to make new software available, however it does not appear to be a reliable solution. We need to restrict the number of people who have such access to keep some accountability. We want to remove everyone except ops staff, who would be notified of requests for new uploads via the netreq mailing list. A draft of a document describing the new process is scheduled to be delivered to Roger Roach by the end of next week, but we feel that we need some control over the files on the server at this time, especially as we make plans to add new packages such as MacOS. We want to implement this change as of 5:00PM January 29th.
