<p>I will see if I can get all the floor plans together in time, to try
and refine this first order estimate.
<p>Initially, I'm going to estimate an average of 25 access points per
building, along the lines of the student center deployment.&nbsp; This
is across 11 dorms, plus the new one under construction, for a total of
300 access points.&nbsp; I'll also estimate 70 power injectors will be
needed.
<p>Equipment wise, we'd be looking at approximately $233,500 ($650 per
AP, $550 per injector).&nbsp; We would need to get current pricing to finalize
this.&nbsp; I'd recommend deploying Avaya's new generation AP, so we don't
have issues if we want to deploy 802.11a in addition to 802.11b.
<p>For installation costs, we can start with&nbsp; the draft proposal we
discussed of $1000 per AP.&nbsp; We need to keep in mind that the physical
infrastructure in the dorms is below par, and we would likely need a firm
commitment from Housing to get the resources we need.&nbsp; As an example,
conduits in Next House are full, and I am told Housing has expressed resistance
on installing new ones.&nbsp; As the infrastructure is below par, I'd probably
want to raise the approximate per AP&nbsp;cost to $1200, or $360,000 total.&nbsp;
This would NOT include any general infrastructure upgrades needed.&nbsp;
Tom or others in the network group are probably better up to date on the
dorm network situation than I am.
<p>If we want to do the grad dorms (6 +1 under construction) as well, I'd
add an additional 175 APs and 40 injectors, for $135,750 for equipment
and $210,000 for installation.
<p>Totals:&nbsp; $593,500 for undergraduate dorms (300 APs) , $939,250
for grad and undergrad (475 APs).
<p>An alternative estimate would be to scale expenditures for the wireless
project to the number of APs needed for the dorms.&nbsp; Some issues with
this approach are the need to remove the costs for the test equipment purchased
during the project (~$35,000) and that we received equipment from Avaya/Agere
on a one-for-one matching basis.
<p>Some issues that may change this a bit:&nbsp; We would need to verify
both new AP prices and whether we can still get the one-for-one donation
from Avaya/Agere.&nbsp; Also, we do have a stock of APs not used in the
project, which we're looking into upgrade/trade-in possibilities for.
<p>I'd regard all of this as approximate until we could do a site survey
and get some accurate data on cabling costs and issues.&nbsp; From our
experience, we're probably looking at $48,000 for a survey of all the dorms,
grad and undergrad.
