Subject: Summary of combinations There are two kinds of keypads for the electronic locks used at MIT. The first kind, which has the brand name 'unican', has only five buttons that are numbered (12), (34), (56), (78), (90). Thus the combination 77707 is the same as 77797. This kind of lock only remembers the last five digits, so the combination 123477707 will also work to open this lock. However, if you push too many buttons, the device assumes you are guessing and starts buzzing at you. While it's buzzing (about a minute) it ignores further key strokes. The second kind of e-lock has twelve buttons like a telephone key pad. I will call these 12D locks. The * and # keys can be used to delimit the combination. The combination for the 12D locks can be found by unscrewing the cover of the keypad and reading the switches inside. When you take off the panel you get a circuit board and a set of letters A-E and #'s 0 to 9 and color-coded wire running from each letter to one number. Well wouldn't you know that if you read the destination numbers for each letter you get through the door. The unican locks have a master combo which can open the lock and can set the slave combo. The two kinds of mechanical button locks are made by Simplex. One kind has five buttons arranged in a circle, the other arranges the button in a vertical line. The main feature of these mechanical locks is that the combinations can include pushing two buttons at the same time. If you encounter one, its worth trying the factor set combination: (24)-1. To reset the slave combo on the 5 button unican lock 1) type master combo 2) type any digit 3) type the slave combo. This means that you MUST NOT press an extra digit after entering the master combo.
