Subject:  Holiday Gatherings 

Folks:  Once again, it is the time of the year when holiday parties and
functions occur which may involve the use of alcoholic beverages.  MIT's 
policy states that no alcoholic beverage may be consumed in any work 
area unless expressly authorized by an officer of the Institute.  
Legal developments in this area, as well as good sense, make it 
imperative that we be aware of the legal liability the Institute may be
exposed to if reasonable care is not exercised in the planning and 
implementation of holiday functions.

I want to call your attention to three issues about holiday parties 
which could in any way be construed as being sponsored by the Institute, 
Information Systems, or an group within Information Systems.  

1. It is against the law to serve alcohol to persons under the age of 
21.

2. It is an irresponsible act to serve an intoxicated person and it is 
a policy of the Institute NOT to serve intoxicated persons.

3. It is a policy of the Institute that non-alcoholic beverages be 
available at all functions and that drivers be provided if 
overindulgence occurs.
