This is the inaugural mail to the "it-service" list. This purpose is
two fold:

1. To test the list
2. To urge you to attend the IS holiday party if you can.

Regarding the first, some of you may not have considered yourselves as
working in the service process. When we constructed this list, we
tried to be as inclusive as possible. That means that some of you who
will do most of your work in another process (e.g. delivery or
support) are also on this list. All this means is that we are
guessing that sometime over the next six to twelve months, you might
find yourself doing some maintenance or enhancements to existing
systems or some other activity that is currently considered part of
the service process and we wanted you to feel part of this process.
Feel free to take that into account when reading mail sent to this
list.

Also, if anyone knows of someone who should be part of service but did
not get this mail, please let me know and I'll track down the problem.

The second reason for sending this mail is to ask you to attend the
IS holiday party on Tuesday if you at all can. It is not too late to
let Dani (Daniela Aivazian <dania@MIT.EDU>) know either way. I know
that not all of us feel in a holiday spirit, but this is a good
opportunity to get away from some of the pressures and to mingle with
people from outside of our present group.

I regret that I have not gotten around as much as I would like, but I
will try harder to be more available when I get back from my vacation.
I know that these changes have been tough on people and I want to
help. People who know me know that I share many of your concerns and
want to find solutions. We are in this business because we are all
very good at finding the problems in almost anything and that is
important. However we need to concentrate on a different skill, being
constructive and finding solutions to these problems. I'm committed
to making the service processes as good as they can be and I certainly
can't do it without your full cooperation. To do this we need to work
with each other and the other processes. Events such as holiday
parties help to make the bridges we need to accomplish this.
Therefore, please come if you can.

Feel free to come to me if there is something I can help you with.

Roger
