I have yet to see select() documented for real, which is part of
the problem.  Does X/Open cover it well?

There is another non-standard feature to Linux's select(),
although it is probably not relevant to the poster's problem.
Linux actually reports errors (like port unreachable) to the
exceptfds structure, not the readfds or writefds!  Amazing,
isn't it?  AFAIK Linux is unique in this respect.

I have encountered a similar situation.
I have msdos on hda and linux on hdc (primary on the second ide interface 
onboard). I tried to install lilo on the MBR of hda, but lilo warns me of 
not recognizing hd at 0x82.
I actually had it the other way first time (linux on hda, msdos on hdc) 
but lilo cannot start msdos as Mr. Graham experienced. (lilo installs 
with similar warning.)
This time lilo stops at LI. and system hangs. 
Now I have resorted to using loadlin from msdos, and it is quite reliable.
Just out of curiousity, is there any solution other that bios fix?

Your workaround could be what I did.
Just swap those drives and start linux off loadlin.
You can actually put a small script in your autoexec.bat file to give you 
a prompt to choose between the two.

(OK means that it works ok, NO means I got the same problem than before:

1.3.41                  OK                      - (not tested)

NOTE: All kernels were compiled with the same options, save for sound 
card support (it was sometimes enabled, sometimes not, as shown above).

NOTE: this is with a Matrox Millenium (it runs very well in X, yes)

IN _all_ kernels the sound driver version was the same: 3.5 alpha 5. (I 
think the number is right. I am sure the version is the same).

The advantage is that you can run the new ELF-stuff. And yes Patrick updated a
few packages also. I am running our Internet Server right now at 2.3. Our Shell Server

to 3.0 to have a consistent interface.

But by and large I am disappointed by 3.0. There are not many enhancements. I
am thinking of using Debian in the future. I am always installing a lot of software 
that I get from sunsite or elsewhere to get the features I need. And then there are
the bugs that are rarely fixed.

mile stone in Linux world (I think so.)

Well, I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're interested in, but
there's a small Linux utility called "diskdown" that interfaces with the
IDE drive interface and spins down the disk after a parameter-specified
period of inactivity.  I'm not sure if it's what you want - it only works
with IDE drives - but the source code is there, and maybe y'all can make
something out of it.

Do you have the cdrom set up so that it's polling instead of using interrupts?
If not, then you need to put the interrupt after the base address.  If you're
using polling, then just use 0 as the interrupt.

For example, I have mine set to use interrupt 10.  My append looks like

cdu31a=0x340,10

Try adding the interrupt (or 0 for polling) and see if it now works.

I dont have enough memory for running a system without swap :(

I actually forgot to say that I am running a kernel with the kswap 
patches... But I'll look into those configurations

Well... Yes, that is probably a good idea, but I still dont want it to 
have more than 5 megs of disk buffers. In my opinion that is never 
needed, and there is no reason for it to grow to more than that. Is there 
any chance of this being an option in a future kernel?

I cannot pass file descriptors between process.

It seems that is not working even for a small example taken from the
W. Richard Stevens book "UNIX Network Programming" Section 6.10
"Passing File Descriptors".

Is this a general problem with Linux OS ?

Does it taken into account into a new Linux Kernel ?

Finally, is this option supported from Linux ?
