The people I have talked to suggest the following:

* Keep the Voxware interface and support for the non-PCM parts of the
sound system.

* Implement what vat wants for PCM, with perhaps some compatibility
cruft for the old interface.

This way, we get an audio driver that provides the sort of timing and
synchronization applications like vat need, AND compatibility with
what the rest of the world is doing for MIDI and FM synthesis.
