Someone posted earlier that socket support in Netscape-Linux did not work.
I am new at this and a little confused at the meaning of "socket". For
example, the connect() method of class java.net.URLConnection is abstract.

Does broken socket support imply that I cannot write a usable connect()
method? I would appreciate it if someone could post an example of an
implementation of connect() - say to ftp a file.

Perhaps an example would help:

httpd server(machine 1) serving html pages containing java applets to
user (machine 2). html page takes user input and starts an applet running
on user's machine (machine 2). The purpose of the applet might be to
generate a quote for an item. The applet generates a quote for the user
but also generates a file containing the quote
to return via ftp to the originating machine (machine 1).

Is this readily done?

What is the correct usage of the terms "client" and "server" in this situation?

Thanks for any help.
