REGARDING libc problem

I don't think I've setup my libc correctly.
Every time I try to compile an applet I get the following:
"/usr/local/java/bin/./../bin/i586/java: can't resolve symbol
'__libc_malloc'"

The documentation says:

"If you don't already have it, get libc.5.2.16.bin.tar.gz from
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/packages/GCC/ . Uncompress and untar and copy
the files in the lib subdirectory of the top level of the hierarchy to /lib."

Will libc.5.2.18 work? (I assumed backwards compatibility of course)

The resultant .tar file extracts an 'include' and a 'libc' directory -- NOT a
'lib' directory. Do I need to put the .tar file into the root directory and
extract there or what? <very unclear>
