Got it working finally! Thanks to everyone who helped. A suggestion for the author(s) of the documentation though: For those newbies like me, It might help to mention in the HOWTO: 1.) that you *MUST* obtain the binary distribution of libc, not the source distribution. I heard that several other people made the same mistake that I did and grabbed the wrong distribution. 2.) The libc.so binary distribution has to be un-tarred from the root directory. 3.) Also, I checked the symbolic link in /lib/libc.so.5 -> libc.so.5.2.18, and re-did an 'ldconfig' to insure it was working. Everything is fine now. Linux and Java - what a combination!
