I'll second Andy Lee's recommendation of this book:

	"Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days"
	by Laura Lemay and Charles L. Perkins

	  (1st printing has beta JDK/API)
	  (3rd printing--today--has 1.0 JDK/API)

Why?  I've been following the daily plan for the book and I really
like it.  There are some cute production mistakes but I know Charles
is busy obliterating them as I write.  Mainly, I've known Charles
since 1975 and he is throws himself very deeply into technologies, and
fortunately, he tells people about things years before they become
mainstream.  For example, in 1977 he showed me C, in 1978 it was Unix,
in 1980 it was Smalltalk, later it was Connection Machines, in 1988 it
was NeXTstep, in 1990 it was the Web, and not long after that it was
Oak (now Java).  In 1985 he introduced me to Richard Stallman, which
certainly added to my education.  So yeah, I'm very excited to see
Charles' book.  And I'm just as eager to buy Guy Steele's tome when it
comes out in the spring.
