As of Thursday, the 17-stock group had gained 28.5% since Jan. 1. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, during that period, is un- changed. Group leader Nelson Thomas Inc., which struck a high of 19 last week, is up 66% so far this year. The stock has been on the rise for the past two years thanks to strong earnings growth. The company has posted double-digit earnings gains of at least 14% in seven of the past eight quarters. The Nashville, Tenn.-based publisher has cornered the Christian book market. The company, which is already the world's largest Bible publisher, has been increasing its market share in the re- ligious publishing business through acquisitions. Its most re- cent purchase was the September $72 million buyout of Word Inc. from Capital Cities/ABC Inc. In August, it purchased Here's Life Publishers from the Campus Crusade For Christ. John Wiley & Sons Class A has advanced about 45% since the begin- ning of the year, and is now trading at its highest level since July 1990. John Wiley's earnings have been spotty.
