Up 4.4% last week, the thin ten-stock group has gained more than 34% since the be- ginning of the year. Synalloy, which traded at a all-time high of 223/4 yesterday, has more than doubled this year on a tur- naround in earnings. The Spartanburg, S.C.-based company has re- ported earnings gains of 43% and 69% in the past two quarters. That follows four quarters of declining earnings. Synalloy makes stainless steel pipes as well as dyes, pigments and specialty chemicals. On Monday, the company declared a new eight-cent divi- dend payable Dec. 1. Valmont Industries also has produced a dramatic turnaround in earnings this year. In the past two quar- ters, earnings increased 67% and 2,200%. In response, the stock has surged more than 60% since early January. Valley, Neb.-based Valmont Industries is the largest manufacturer of mechanical move irrigation equipment.
