The Nasdaq composite index shot up 5.23 points, or 0.85%, to 622.05 - its highest close since March 20. Biotechnology stocks followed through on a powerful advance last week, when Investor's Business Daily's index for the group rose 5.2%. Although some analysts maintain that the move is no more than a rebound after a crushing sell-off earlier this year - the biotech index has fallen about 30% since Jan. 1 - others contend that industry fundamentals are fueling a more sustainable rise. Analyst Jay B. Silverman of Wertheim Schroder & Co. noted that researchers and biotech firms are likely to begin presenting up- beat reports at a series of medical conferences through the end of the year. Silverman has talked with investors around the world recently and found that, "They're very interested in biotechnolo- gy, and they have a lot of cash." Those factors, along with talk of biotech investment tax credits, the absence of looming regula- tory bombs and the potential for short-covering, convinced Silverman that the group's leaders will probably remain in an up- trend through the end of the year. Immunex Corp. surged 31/4 to 531/4. Silverman said four medical conferences scheduled between today and Dec. 9 will highlight Immunex's PIXY321, a compound for boosting platelet and white blood cells, and its IL-1 and TNFr soluable receptors for sepsis and autoimmune diseases. The analyst said he also was encouraged by the the possibility of ex- panded uses for Leukine, the company's approved product for bone marrow transplant patients. Lastly, he said, Immunex may buy back Receptech Corp. before Jan. 31 and boost confidence in soluable receptors. Meanwhile, Amgen Inc. added 25/8 to 687/8 and Chiron Corp. 25/8 to 551/2.
