The 20-stock group has gained 25% since Jan. 1, while the Stan- dard & Poor's 500-stock index has barely budged. Eagle Hardware, which split 3-for-2 this week, has tripled since its debut in July. In the past two quarters, Eagle Hardware has pumped out triple-digit earnings gains of at least 233%. The Tukwila, Wash.-based company operates four hardware home centers in the Pacific Northwest. Each store carries some 50,000 items for do- it-yourself home improvement enthusiasts and professional con- tractors. Eagle plans to open three additional stores in fiscal 1992 and four to six stores in both 1993 and 1994. Home Depot has been a quintessential growth stock for many years, having made a nearly 12-fold move since the fall of 1988. Earnings growth has been in the double digits for years at the home im- provement store operator, based in Atlanta. In May, the company said it plans to have 522 stores in the U.S. by the end of 1996, up from 182 currently. This article is copyright 1992 Investors Business Daily.
