Thanks to increased wood prices, the 13-stock group as of Thursday was up 41.5% since Jan. 1. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, by contrast, slipped 0.5% during that time. Rayonier Timberlands LP is up more than 60% since Jan. 1. For the past couple of months, however, the stock has been trading in a tight range, hovering near a recently established high of 40. The Stamford, Conn.-based company owns timberlands in Washington, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. It has produced four con- secutive quarters of double-digit growth of at least 18%. Despite its healthy price and earnings performance, Rayonier has garnered relatively little institutional support. The stock's float is a thin 5,000 shares out of a total 20,000 shares. Louisiana Pacif- ic Corp. has climbed more than 70% since Jan. 1. On Monday, the company reported third-quarter earnings of $1.03 a share, or 110% more than a year earlier. In the previous quarter, earnings rose 50%. Louisiana Pacific, based in Portland, Ore., produces lumber as well as chips, veneer, windows, doors and pulp for the build- ing industry.
