The 14-stock group is up 32.4% since Jan. 1, compared with only 0.4% for the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index. Last week, it gained 3.1%. Bombay- has surged 155% from a January low of 15. The stock currently is trading near a recently established all-time high of 393/8. Behind the move this year are three quarters of triple-digit earnings growth of at least 233%. The Fort Worth, Texas-based company sells English-style reproduc- tion furniture, prints and accessories through more than 300 stores in the U.S. and Canada. In October, the company said it planned to open 20 superstores by Christmas 1992, up from eight that were originally planned. Heilig Meyers has had a rocky year, but has managed to gain nearly 50% since Jan. 1 and currently is trading near a high of 39. Heilig, based in Rich- mond, Va., operates nearly 400 home furnishing stores in the Southeast. Heilig's earnings gains have been more modest than Bombay's. It has strung together four quarters of double-digit growth of at least 18%. But in the past 12 months, Heilig's sales have totaled $580 million, compared with Bombay's $184 million.
