An excellent example of the verity of his thesis is that of Joel Broyhill, who served 11 years in Congress representing the 10th District of Virginia. He was a superb practitioner of this art and seemed to have ingratiated himself with nearly all his constituents with countless favors of the nature of those described in the article. The irony was that he was a very conservative Republican representing a famously liberal Democratic district, whose residents proved oblivious to his voting record. William R. Moses Bethesda, Md. Good job on "Aiming to Please." Put an "attaboy" in your service jacket. It's a sorry story that needs to be told. And told and told. Greed for liquor, loose women and money under the table has been replaced by simple greed to stay in office. And "casework" is just one of the more blatant scams congresspersons use to avoid brushes with legitimate work. I'm disappointed that the national pressies, who can usually be counted on to sniff out questionable PAC contributions or spot a bimbo on the payroll who can't type, don't make more of the fact that our legislators have become cynical, tax-supported social workers on the prowl for votes. It's just one more powerful argument for term limits. Larry Thornberry Tampa, Fla. Write: Insight, Correspondence Editor, 3600 New York Ave. N.E., Washington, D.C. 20002. Fax: (202) 529-2484.
