Environmentalists may tell loggers to give up their livelihood to protect the northern spotted owl. They may insist that tuna fishermen bear the enormous financial burden of revolutionizing their technique to protect dolphins. But when it comes to disrupting the convenience of their own dirty-diaper-free lifestyle, they're all heart. The New York Times recently reported that the battle to replace disposables with reusable cloth diapers has largely ground to a halt. A solid waste expert from the Natural Resources Defense Council, "who has long been plagued by his own ambivalence over the diaper debate," told the Times that "Freud was right about us. Civilization has its costs." William Rathje, director of the garbage project at the University of Arizona, said: "After all, convenience is something we should consider." And then there is the Environmental Protection Agency official who sagely informed the Times that "this is not a simple issue. There are environmental consequences, health considerations, and issues of life style that all matter. And the right answer is not always the same for everyone.
