The Falcons, under Coach Pete Loporchio, qualified as the No. 1 team for the Pacific League postseason tournament by defeating Glendale, 11-8, last week. The winner of the postseason tournament will receive a berth into the Southern Section playoffs. Crescenta Valley's only loss in league play came against Hoover. COMMUNITY COLLEGES The Glendale College football team takes a five-game winning streak into Saturday's Western State Conference home game against Compton. Glendale improved its record to 6-1 and 5-1 in the WSC with a 63-13 victory over winless Ventura on Saturday. Compton also enters its game against Glendale without a victory. "Our kids did a great job against Ventura because they didn't let their record influence their performance," Glendale Coach John Cicuto said. "We need that same kind of effort against Compton as we get ready for the final two games of our conference schedule." Glendale concludes its regular season with conference games against Moorpark and Harbor. Glendale gained 646 yards against Ventura, including 460 rushing. Leon Gable gained 126 yards, and Pathon Rucker and Andy Cleland each gained 125. All three backs scored two touchdowns. Eric Kiesau completed 11 of 14 passes for 153 yards in slightly more than two quarters. Glendale defensive back Manny Ruedaflores intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble and blocked an extra-point attempt as the Vaqueros held Ventura to 258 yards. The Glendale men's and women's cross-country teams will co-host the Western State Conference championships Tuesday at Griffith Park. The Glendale men's soccer team has a bye Friday before resuming its WSC schedule Tuesday at Oxnard. Glendale's women's volleyball team plays at West Los Angeles College tonight and at Ventura on Tuesday. COLLEGES The Occidental football team was, for all practical purposes, eliminated from the race for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship when the Tigers lost to La Verne, 31-21, Saturday. Occidental, 4-3 and 2-2 in the SCIAC, held a 21-10 lead late in the third quarter, but lost when La Verne came back with 21 points. Occidental plays Claremont- Mudd-Scripps Saturday night at Occidental before concluding its season Nov. 14 against Redlands. The Occidental women's volleyball team entered the week with a shot at winning its first conference championship since 1983. The Tigers were 16-4 and 8-2 in the SCIAC before Tuesday night's match against La Verne. Occidental concludes its regular season Friday against Cal Lutheran. Occidental defeated Whittier and UC San Diego last week. The Occidental men's and women's cross-country teams won SCIAC championships Saturday at El Prado Regional Park in Chino Hills. Jose Garcia of Occidental won the men's 8-K event in 25 minutes 56 seconds. Teammates Konstantine Kindreich was second in 25:56 and Will Allan was third in 26:19. In the women's competition, Occidental's Arcelia Gomez won the 5-K event in 19:36. Becky Kopchick was second in 19:47 and Kelly Dearborn was fourth in 20:40. Occidental will compete in the NCAA Division III West Regional Nov. 14 at Mills College in Oakland. PREP ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Winston Hayes, Ribet Academy--Hayes, a wide receiver, caught five passes--four for touchdowns--during a 50-0 rout of Los Angeles Lutheran. Quarterback Caleb Granger passed to Hayes on touchdown plays of 25, 45, 12 and five yards. COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Jose Garcia and Arcelia Gomez, Occidental--Garcia, a senior from Yakima, Wash., was named men's runner of the year in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after winning the SCIAC individual title last week in Chino Hills. Gomez, a senior from Los Angeles, was named women's runner of the year for her first-place finish in the women's race. MISCELLANY Don Nygord of La Crescenta, a two-time Olympian in air pistol and standard pistol, has been selected to compete for the United States shooting team for the 1992-93 season. . . . Nathan Dishington completed 18 of 24 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown in the Tornadoes' Pacific League defeat. Tony Delgado passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns, including a four-yard scoring pass to Armando Valdez in the fourth quarter.
