Rhodes Effective December 1, it becomes official. Our long-standing friend and as- sociate, Thomas L. (Dusty) Rhodes will have left the investment-banking firm of Goldman Sachs in order to join NATIONAL REVIEW. He will serve as the magazine's President, replacing WFB (who continues as Pres- ident of NR Inc.). Dusty Rhodes has been a member of NR's Board of Di- rectors for four years, and of its Executive Committee for two years. The exact nature of his duties at NR will evolve. Meanwhile, he has under- taken to represent WFB as required. TLR graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963, and re- ceived his MBA from Wharton in 1965. He also serves on the Boards of Directors of the International Rescue Committee and the Manhattan In- stitute, and he is a founder of Change-NY. He is on top of everything else a splendid fellow, which makes him fit well with his colleagues in our incomparable staff. Dear Mr. Buckley: Thought you might be interested in this classified ad from the frontiers of modern folk eugenics, San Francisco-style. It was taped next to an ATM machine at Castro and Market. Even by her choice of location, the advertiser exhibits a rudimentary natural selec- tion. I could go on with my exegesis, but that would spoil your fun. Designer Genes Wanted All of my gay male friends are HIV + and I'm a lesbian who wants to get pregnant. Want to help? Ever wanted to pass on your good traits but not the responsibility of being a parent? Let's talk if you are a HIV - gay man, healthy, substance/smoke-free, intelligent, attractive (hopefully with brown hair and green/hazel or blue eyes but negotiable), open-minded, honest, creative, politically left of center with a sense of humor and the curiosity necessary to answer this ad. Please enclose your phone number with your response so we may talk. Any takers? Raymond Spears Santa Clara, Calif. Dear Mr. Spears: We've passed the ad around the office, but we couldn't find any male with green/hazel eyes. Sorry. WFB Dear Mr. Buckley: We are looking for a few select clients for our services. We work with companies that want to grow and prosper, no matter what the economic climate. Consultec is a well-known and highly respected management resources group with an extremely effective process for optimizing client companies' potential. I'll call you in a few days to explore the possibility of your being a can- didate for our process. Sincerely, Anne McKenna Marketing Representative Consultec New Rochelle, N.Y.
