Revenue in the quarter, the second of the company's fiscal year, rose 15 percent, to $7.7 million from $6.7 million a year ear- lier. In the first six months of the year, the company's profit fell 10 percent, to $1.71 million (40 cents) from $1.89 million (44 cents) in the same period last year. Revenue was up 4 percent, to $14.54 million from $13.92 million. Infodata Systems Inc. of Falls Church said it lost $1.23 million in the third quarter and that it expects to continue to lose mo- ney "for the next few quarters." In the same quarter last year, the company earned $69,000. Infodata sells software that is used to collect, search for and retrieve information. The company said much of its third-quarter loss stemmed from write-offs of the cost of developing some software that no longer fits its marketing plans, and the cost of part of an outdated mainframe computer system it is replacing. It said its cost-cutting efforts included laying off about 20 people in September. Revenue in the quarter fell 17 percent, to $2.46 million from $2.96 million a year earlier. In the first nine months of the year, Infodata lost $2.08 mil- lion, compared with a profit of $230,000 in the same period last year.
