AROUND THE NATION=8 L.A. Deputies Fired in '90 In Shooting, Beat-
ing Death< LOS ANGELES - Eight Los Angeles County sheriff's depu-
ties were fired in the fatal shooting and beating of a black man
after a chase in 1990, the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday.

Deputies said they saw Arthur Jones robbing and kidnapping a man
at gunpoint March 1, 1990. During a 10-minute chase, deputies
fired at Jones, who crashed several blockades, ran stop signs and
discarded a shotgun.

A bullet fractured a vertebra in his neck, and he died three days
later. Deputies said that when Jones got out of his vehicle he
resisted arrest and was struck several times with a flashlight.

A coroner's report said the beating might have killed Jones if he
not already been mortally wounded by the bullet.

Colorado Boycott Gains Support<COLORADO SPRINGS - The national
and statewide cry to boycott Colorado in response to the passage
of the anti-gay rights Amendment 2 appears to be gaining momen-
tum.  The latest demand came from actress Barbra Streisand, who
urged fellow entertainers to boycott Colorado.

Both supporters and critics of Amendment 2, as well as tourism
and convention officials across the state, say it is too early to
tell if the controversy will take a severe bite out of Colorado's
tourism and convention business.

Thus far, the largest cancellation has come from a national group
of women trade unionists that would have brought 1,500 visitors
to Denver and would have generated an estimated $3 million in
tourist money.

The amendment repeals local ordinances prohibiting discrimination
based on sexual orientation, and bans the passage of similar
laws. Denver, Boulder and Aspen had passed such ordinances.

Addenda<NASA launched a small satellite from Vandenberg Air Force
Base in California on a $19 million mission in the Pentagon's
development of the "Star Wars" system to detect and destroy in-
coming nuclear missiles.Wyoming's Law Enforcement Academy is
looking for a few good drinkers who would like to earn $25. The
academy in Douglas wants six to seven volunteers willing to get
drunk in the middle of the day Dec. 1 to serve as class subjects
for prospective law enforcement officers, said instructor John
Rabun.At Southern Methodist University in Dallas, nearly two
dozen students staged a sit-in in the office of law school Dean
Paul Rogers, after he denied tenure to Ndiva Kofele-Kale, a black
law professor.  Kofele-Kale was supported by the school's tenure
committee, and tenured faculty voted 20 to 4 for his promotion.A
Salvation Army bell ringer collecting money for Christmas in
Menomonee Falls, Wis., was arrested for allegedly selling mariju-
ana to high school students, police said. Authorities spotted the
24-year-old Milwaukee man selling a small amount of the drug to a
