Chancellor Helmut Kohl acknowledged for the first time that Ger-
many was in a recession. Kohl said in a speech to parliament that
the effects of a worldwide economic downturn had finally hit Ger-
many after being delayed because of the temporary economic boom
provided by German unification.<McDonnell Douglas's $594 million
strategic defense initiative research contract with the Army has
been canceled. The Army said the shrinking defense budget forced
it to withdraw the contract to develop a ground-based surveil-
lance and tracking system from McDonnell and four major
subcontractors.<The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reached agreements
with unions representing Pittsburgh Press mailers and pressmen,
clearing the way for the Post-Gazette to buy the Press.  The oth-
er eight unions, including the Teamsters, whose strike has idled
both papers for six months, settled last week. Terms were not
disclosed.<The Transportation Department dismissed a Delta Air-
lines petition asking the agency to publicly review a plan by Air
Canada to acquire an interest in Continental Airlines. The
department said an informal review is being conducted.<02:05 11-
