The increase came despite a nearly 4 percent drop in revenue, to $32.5 million from $33.7 million a year earlier. The company said it was running more efficiently and so was able to increase pro- fit margins despite the revenue drop. Systems Center Inc., a Reston software company, said its profit slipped in the third quarter of the year, falling 9 percent to $905,641 (6 cents a share) from $999,792 (7 cents) in the same quarter last year. Revenue at the company rose 4 percent, to $31.75 million from $30.66 million in the same period last year. "The third-quarter profit reflects the significant reduction in our expense base achieved through a worldwide reduction in work force, the closing and consolidation of certain offices" and the company's abandonment of two product lines, Chairman Robert E. Cook said in a statement. Results for the first nine months of the year, the company said, were affected by one-time events in earlier quarters - an income tax benefit of $17 million in the first quarter because of ac- counting changes, and an $11.5 million charge in the second quar- ter for restructuring costs. For the nine months, Systems Center earned $2.48 million (16 cents), down 17 percent from $2.98 million (26 cents) in the same period last year. Revenue rose 7 percent, to $93.82 million from $87.93 million. America Online Inc., a Vienna company that runs databases person- al computer users can dial up, reported that its profit rose 28 percent in its first quarter ended Sept. 30, to $1.1 million (17 cents a share) from $859,000 (18 cents, with fewer shares out- standing) in the same quarter last year. Profit rose because the number of subscribers to the firm's in- formation services rose. The company said it had 194,200 sub- scribers as of Sept. 30, up from 140,000 a year earlier. Revenue in the quarter rose 36 percent, to $7.77 million from $5.7 mil- lion in the same period last year. Industrial Training Corp. of Herndon, which makes training videos, said its third-quarter profit fell 9 percent, to $207,000 (12 cents a share) from $228,000 (14 cents) in the same period last year. The company said customers were delaying purchases because of the uncertain economy. Revenue was off 27 percent during the third quarter, to $2.65 million from $3.65 million a year earlier. For the first nine months of the year, Industrial Training earned $450,000 (28 cents), up 75 percent from $257,000 (16 cents) in the same period last year. Revenue rose 4 percent, to $7.97 million from $7.68 million. 02:12 10-28C9999----- Copyright 1992, The Washington Post.
