Richard C. Shelby defeated Richard Sellers by a wide margin. In a House race, George Wallace Jr. (D), son of the ailing former governor and presidential contender, lost narrowly to Terry Everett (R), a peanut farmer and millionaire businessman who said he wants to change people's perception of Alabama as a state of rednecks. Republicans also fared well in a Birmingham district redrawn to their liking, where popular incumbent Democrat Ben Erdreich lost to Republican Spencer Bachus, who won the endorsement of The Birmingham News. And State Sen. Earl F. Hilliard (D) became the first black member of the delegation.< ARKANSASand Kathy Sawyer> 02:24 11-05C9999----- Copyright 1992, The Washington Post.
