KANSAS<

The Democrats threatened in the GOP bastion, but Bush kept it the
Republican  column with 39 percent of the vote, thanks in part to
Senate Minority Leader Robert J. Dole, who defeated challenger
Gloria O'Dell by a 2-1 ratio in winning his fifth term. Clinton
came in with 34 percent of the vote and Perot took 27 percent.

Republican House members Pat Roberts and Jan Meyers and Democrat-
ic members Jim Slattery and Dan Glickman all won reelection by
handsome margins, although Democrats had worried about Glickman.
The eight-term member not only had the burden of 107 overdrafts
from the House Bank, but had been targeted for defeat by the lo-
cal cable television industry because of his support for the ca-
ble reregulation bill. <

NEBRASKA<Bush came in with one of his best showings in Nebraska,
garnering 47 percent of the vote to Clinton's 30 percent and
about 24 percent for Perot.

With the exception of Democratic Rep. Peter Hoagland, whose fate
always seems to be determined late into the night in his fiercely
contested Omaha district, incumbents had an easy time.

Rep. Doug Bereuter (R), was reelected to an eighth term in his
eastern district, defeating Democratic financial planner Gerry
Finnegan.  Freshman Republican Bill Barrett, the oldest member of
the 1990 class in the House, won another term in his vast western
Nebraska district, beating Democrat Lowell Fisher, a cattle
rancher.

Hoagland eked out a third term by beating Republican former coun-
ty attorney Ronald L. Staskiewicz by less than 6,000 votes.<

NORTH DAKOTA<North Dakotans came out heavily in support of Bush
with 45 percent voting for the GOP ticket. Clinton got 32 percent
of the vote and Perot came in third with 23 percent. Breaking
with its recent tradition of voting Democratic for governor,
voters elected Republican businessman Edward T. Schafer over
Democratic Attorney General Nicholas Spaeth. Schafer replaces
Gov. George A. Sinner (D), who did not seek a third four-year
term.

Democrat Byron L. Dorgan, for 12 years the state's House member,
easily won the Senate seat vacated by Democrat Kent Conrad. State
Insurance Commissioner Earl Pomeroy, a Democrat, won the House
seat.

North Dakotans go to the polls again in December, to fill the
seat of the late Sen.  Quentin N. Burdick (D). Conrad, who re-
tired from the Senate after one term - he said he felt obliged to
honor a campaign pledge to leave if he had not reduced the
federal budget deficit - has responded to party entreaties to
seek Burdick's seat.<

SOUTH DAKOTA<In South Dakota, voters came out for Bush with 41
percent voting Republican, 37 percent voting for Clinton and 22
percent for Perot. Sen. Tom Daschle (D) won a second Senate term
with a 2-1 ratio  over Republican challenger Charlene Haar, the
only woman to win a GOP nomination for Senate this year. Rep. Tim
Johnson (D) won his fourth term.

South Dakotans refused to enact income and corporate taxes,
vetoed a proposal for a landfill to handle out-of-state garbage
and retained a three-year-old video lottery. South Dakotans
passed a referendum calling for term limits of 12 years for
