Automakers said sales of North American-made cars and trucks rose
13.4 percent in October, the first month of the 1993 model year.
Domestic car sales showed only a modest improvement from the
year-earlier period but light trucks sales continued to post hef-
ty gains, rising 34 percent from the year-ago period.<Nissan
dismissed the ad agency that helped launch its Infiniti luxury
car line three years ago - even though Infiniti sales are up 21
percent this year. The importer said it wanted to stretch its
marketing budget. Hill Holliday Connors Cosmopulos said the unex-
pected loss of the $75 million account, the Boston-based agency's
largest, means it will close its 125-employee office near Los
Angeles.<The Bank of England was accused in Parliament of negli-
gence in its supervision of BCCI, and its governor, Robin Leigh-
Pemberton, was urged to resign. Leigh-Pemberton defended the cen-
tral bank's handling of the case and refused to quit.<The Fed,
meanwhile, adopted a rule designed to protect against a global
banking scandal on the scale of BCCI. Under the rule, foreign
banks must prove to the Fed that they have strong supervision in
their home countries before they can operate branches or agencies
