Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) 1st District<

On a night when records were broken across the nation, the
achievement of Cantwell, 34, still stands out. She became the
first Democrat in 40 years to take the well-to-do 1st District of
Washington, centered in the suburbs of north Seattle.

Her pro-business message played so well in the affluent communi-
ties on the eastern shore of Lake Washington, added by recent
redistricting, that she won 58 percent of the vote to 42 percent
for state Sen. Gary Nelson (R).

Her policies of fiscal conservatism coupled with liberal posi-
tions on abortion, the environment and gun control seem to have
been the perfect blend for an electorate that has tended to like
its Republicans moderate. Nelson's hard line on abortion and oth-
er social issues made him anything but an heir to the moderate
retiring incumbent, Rep. John Miller.

Campaign manager Tim Treanor boasts that Cantwell "is definitely
a rising star of the Democratic Party; she is definitely someone
to watch." He notes that she has a rare combination of youth and
experience. Elected to the state legislature when she was 27, she
is a three-term veteran. She ran the 1984 presidential bid of
Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) in the northwestern region when she
was 24.

Treanor's prediction may come true quickly: He says that House
Speaker Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.) already has promised Cantwell a
seat on the House Public Works and Transportation Commit-
