AROUND THE NATION=N.J. Police Find Body of Woman Abducted in Van<
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Police yesterday found the body of a woman ap-
parently abducted with her 3-year-old daughter when she stopped
at a traffic light in her minivan while running errands.

Police Chief Pat LaRocca said investigators identified the body
as that of Gail Shollar, 35, missing since Tuesday night.
Middlesex County Prosecutor Robert Gluck said she had been
stabbed. Her nude body was found in a drainage ditch near Inter-
state 287 in Piscataway, where she lived with her husband and
three children.

Authorities said they had no motive or suspects. Her daughter was
dropped off unharmed outside a day-care center hours after the
abduction. The unoccupied van was found nearby.

Guard Patrols Interstate<JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - National Guardsmen
in Humvees and helicopters will patrol an interstate plagued with
rock-throwing and sniper attacks, Sheriff Jim McMillan said.

The American Automobile Association last week warned motorists to
avoid the 20-mile Interstate 295 belt that loops around part of
Jacksonville as an alternate to congested Interstate 95.

One person has been killed and several injured in more than 30
sniper and rock-throwing incidents since mid-February. The high-
way, which carries 80,000 vehicles a day, is a prime route for
winter travelers to Florida.<

Addenda<Jesse Green Jr., the father of a man beaten to death by
Detroit police officers, has urged friends to remain calm as an
internal investigation of the seven officers suspended in the in-
cident continues. Malice Wayne Green, 35, died Thursday night
after two police officers beat him with a flashlight as five oth-
er officers watched or took part.Lawyers for Bic Corp. said they
will appeal a Bristow, Okla., court ruling awarding three chil-
dren badly burned playing with a Bic cigarette lighter $22 mil-
lion in a lawsuit that claimed the lighters sometimes fail to ex-
tinguish and explode because the butane overheats.John Powell, a
Pennsylvania state prison inmate who died of dehydration last
summer, had been denied water by state Corrections Department of-
ficials during detention in an isolation cell, prison medical
director Carl A. Hoffman Jr. said in testimony before a legisla-
tive committee in Harrisburg. Corrections officials said such
claims about the death of Powell, a convicted rapist who had been
refusing to eat or drink at the time of his death, are prema-
