The telecast - in prime time for the second time - was the highest-rated Daytime Emmy Awards in history. Last year it ranked No. 2 for the week. But CBS won the week, bolstered by the strong premiere of "Raven," which came in at No. 8. BILL & TED HAVE BOGUS SHOWING: The debut of Fox's "Rachel Gunn, R.N." ranked No. 59 in the weekly ratings race. "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures" limped in at No. 89 out of 96 shows. ABC was in third place for the week. "Roseanne" and "Home Improvement" tied for No. 3 and "20:20," featuring an interview with President and Mrs. George Bush, tied at No. 11. PEROT DRAWS TV AUDIENCE: Now that Johnny Carson is gone, Ross Perot could be the new late night king. In a 90-minute live interview Monday on ABC at 11:30 p.m., Perot pulled in 30% share in the overnight ratings, beating NBC's "Tonight Show" and CBS' "Sweating Bullets." However, Perot, the subject of" Peter Jennings Reporting" at 10 p.m. Monday, finished second to NBC's airing of "Return of the Jedi." `ROSEANNE' WRITERS MAKE SWITCH: Besides a star (Tom Arnold) and executive producer (Roseanne Arnold), ABC's midseason sitcom "The Jackie Thomas Show" will also share something else with ABC's top-rated show. "Roseanne" got an all-new writing staff for fall, but many of last season's "Roseanne" writers have new gigs with "Jackie." NEW YORKER GETS NEW EDITOR: Tina Brown was named the new editor of the New Yorker magazine Tuesday. New Yorker 1991 ad pages were down 18.5%. Advertisers see New Yorker readers as affluent but old, i.e. 40ish. Young is what Madison Avenue wants because they haven't made those sometimes lifelong buying decisions like what kind of car they will buy the rest of their lives. O'BRIEN HAS PEOPLE TALKING: Contrary to early talk, Grey Advertising's Jon Mandel says Dan O'Brien's failure to make the Olympic team "doesn't hurt Reebok. Everyone's talking about him and Reebok and they can bring him back for '96." NBC will learn by Thursday whether O'Brien will join its Barcelona Olympics announcing team. FOX FLAGSHIP TO EXPAND NEWS: Fox flagship WNYW-TV New York will expand the Saturday and Sunday editions of its 10 p.m. news from a half-hour to an hour beginning this week. The expanded news will bump out "All in the Family" reruns on Saturdays and the syndicated regional news show "Broadcast New York" on Sundays. COVER GIRL LINE TO BE EXTENDED: Procter & Gamble will offer an extension of its Cover Girl line that will be aimed at African-American women, ADWEEK reports. Grey Advertising will produce a separate $15 million ad campaign for the line. The products are expected to be in stores by later this year or in early 1993, the trade magazine says. THOMPSON GAINS LOTTERY ACCOUNT: The California State Lottery ad account has been officially awarded to the San Francisco office of J. Walter Thompson. The three-year contract calls for billings of up to $25 million annually. Former lottery agency Dailey & Associates of Los Angeles has said it will sue the lottery over its termination, but did not protest JWT's appointment, Advertising Age reports. PLAYTEX MOVES ACCOUNT: Playtex Apparel of Stanford, Conn., has awarded Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising its U.S. and European account, estimated to be worth $40 million. Grey Advertising had held the account. Playtex Apparel was acquired by Sara Lee Corp. in December. TIMES MAG MOVES UP DEADLINES: Beginning with the Aug. 9 edition, The New York Times Magazine will shorten the closing dates for color ads from 45 days before the publication date to 38 days, the magazine has announced. It says the move will help improve customer service. EAGLES QB TO GET OWN CANDYBAR: Morley Candymakers has signed a two-year agreement to produce the Randall Bar, named after Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham. The bar will be marketed in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Morley also makes the Isiah bar, named after Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons. ALASKA TOURISM TO REVIEW PLANS: The Alaska Tourism Council will begin looking at proposals for a five-year advertising contract valued at $50 million this fall. The current contract with Bradley Communications of Anchorage, Alaska and McCann-Erickson of Seattle expires in June, 1993. Advertising Editor: Ed Kelleher.
