Eight GM units worldwide will create ads and promotional programs around the soccer matches. GM will also have field-level ads in the stadiums. GM wouldn't say how much it paid to be a sponsor. Other sponsors include Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Gillette, Fuji Film and M&M:Mars. `GOOD MORNING' WINS WEEK: ABC's "Good Morning America" and NBC's "Today" had a photo finish in the morning ratings race for the week ending July 10th. Here are the numbers: "GMA," 3.6 rating:18 share; "Today," 3.6:20; "CBS This Morning," 2.4:12. NBC TO EXPAND NBA COVERAGE: NBC will expand its NBA coverage to a record 25 regular-season games, including three in prime time. The highlight is the Feb. 21 NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, which will start at 6 p.m. ET. It's the first mid-season star classic in prime time since 1976. Other NBC prime time games: New York Knicks-Chicago Bulls Dec. 25 and Bulls-Cleveland Cavaliers April 18. FCB INT'L MAKES ACQUISITION: FCB International, a subsidiary of Foote, Cone & Belding Communications Inc., said Thursday it has acquired the clients of Nucleo Publicidade in Sao Paulo, Brazil. These clients will be added to the roster of FCB:Siboney Publicidade, the company's existing Sao Paulo operation. It now has billings of $65 million. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. TV ANSWER SIGNS MARDEN-KANE: TV Answer has signed a marketing agreement with Marden-Kane Inc. It allows Marden Kane to be one of the first to offer two-way TV as a marketing tactic for its clients. Additionally, Marden-Kane will be prepared to consult with TV Answer service providers on the use of interactive television for promotional applications. TV Answer plans to offer interactive TV by the middle of next year. PRINT SHOP MAY GO TO COURT: The attorney for an Olympia, Wash., print shop said a law requiring the business to disclose its political advertising records may be unconstitutional. "My guess is this will go to court," Steve Bean said of the dispute between Capitol City Press and the state Public Disclosure Commission. Records are being sought in an investigation of illegal campaign activity. ROSS ROY CLOSING SUBSIDIARY: Ross Roy Advertising, headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., says it is closing its Atlanta subsidiary, Ross Roy Inc. The subsidiary's four accounts, with spending of $10 million, will move to Fitzgerald & Co., as will 22 of Ross Roy Inc.'s 30 employees. RUSSIAN MAG SELLING AD SPACE: Roman-Gazeta, a Russian literary magazine, is seeking Western ads for the 2.4 million circulation twice-monthly. The Moscow-based magazine has named GMB Communications, with offices in New York, Moscow and London, as sales representative. A black and white page costs $10,625. A color page is $12,500. FOXVIDEO PLANS $10 MILLION LAUNCH: FoxVideo plans a $10 million TV and print campaign to back the Aug. 28 video release of "FernGully ... The Last Rainforest." FoxVideo creates its ads in-house. Focus Media, Studio City, Calif., handles media buys for FoxVideo. COUNCIL PULLS AD: The Advertising Council has pulled a public service announcement in response to harsh criticism from the newspaper industry. The ad urges companies to buy smaller print ads. The ad, with the headline "Small ads use less paper," was distributed in March to 1,500 newspapers. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GETS PUSH: Converse is supporting women's basketball. It has given a $250,000 to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, scheduled to open in 1993 in Jackson, Tenn. Converse is also saluting three-time Olympian Theresa Edwards with a poster and is featuring Daedra Charles in an ad in the July-August "Women's Sports & Fitness" magazine. SOFTSOAP TESTED IN BAR VERSION: Colgate-Palmolive has begun testing a bar version of its top-selling liquid soap, Softsoap, in four markets, ADWEEK reports.
