Nielsen Co. "The Academy Awards" was the top-rated show of the week. ABC boasted four of the top five shows. Among specials, ABC's "Barbara Walters Special" was the highest-rated Walters special in two years at No. 4. (For more, see special Ratings package below.) `JAKE' MAY BE ON WAY OUT: CBS' "Jake and the Fatman," now in its fifth year, may be on its way out. "They haven't renewed it, but they haven't canceled it either," says executive producer Fred Silverman. "But my guess is it's a long shot." His hunch is based on the fact that there are already 100 episodes of "Jake," enough for syndication, and William Conrad and Joe Penny have said they will not return. ABC CHANGES SATURDAY LINEUP: ABC will add three new Saturday morning cartoon shows this fall, replacing "Beetlejuice," which moves to Fox; "Hammerman," which is being canceled; and "Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters," which heads to USA Network in reruns. Coming: "The Addams Family"; Goof Troop, featuring Disney's Goofy; and "Wild West C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa," from the creators of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." OGILVY & MATHER GAINS ACCOUNT: The Polynesian Cultural Center Tuesday awarded its advertising account to Ogilvy & Mather - Hawaii, effective June. Four Honolulu advertising agencies participated in the creative bidding process for the Center's account. The Advertising Works, the Cultural Center's current agency, elected not to participate. The Center's new ad campaign is slated to be unveiled in July. MCDONALD'S TO HAVE MAGAZINE: McDonald's is developing a family-activity magazine that will be distributed in McDonald's Corp. restaurants. The publication, titled McMagazine, will carry outside advertising from non-competing marketers and target mothers and their children. Test marketing will begin in the fall. ASICS SPONSORS GAME: Footwear manufacturer Asics Tiger Corp. said Tuesday it will be a sponsor of the 28th annual Roundball Classic. It is part of ASICS's campaign to promote its new line of basketball footwear. The campaign will also feature extensive advertising and athlete endorsements. The game, to be held Friday at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, features the nation's top high school senior players. HOLMAN NAMED TO GANNETT POST: Denise L. Holman has been named vice president in charge of advertising sales in Gannett's Newspaper Division, it was announced Tuesday. Holman will coordinate the activities between the Newspaper Division advertising staff and the Gannett newspapers. Gannett is a nationwide news and information company that publishes 81 daily newspapers. STROH'S ADS USE HUMOR: Stroh Brewery Co.'s new ads no longer feature the "Swedish Bikini Team," but they still have a sense of humor. One ad shows a geologist who is told his supply plane can drop only one box of supplies. The plane swoops down and drops a crate containing Stroh's. As the pilot bids farewall and asks if the geologist has any other requests, the geologist replies, "pretzels." COKE TO SPONSOR MINI-MAGAZINE: Sports Illustrated and Coca-Cola USA say they will jointly publish three special Olympic-themed editions of Sports Illustrated For Kids. The single-sponsor mini-magazines are slated to be bound into the April, May and June issues of the magazine. SPECIAL PACKAGE ON RATINGS: CBS CLINCHES SEASON TITLE: CBS, which will rank as the top-rated network when the 30-week season ends Sunday, will also have the top broadcast ("60 Minutes"), five of the top 10 regularly scheduled programs and eight of the top 15. This week, CBS' David Copperfield special tied at No. 13. But CBS' "Hammer, From the Heart," starring the rapper, ranked No. 87 out of 89 shows. `FIELD OF DREAMS' A HIT: CBS' "Field of Dreams," on the eve of baseball season, scored a home run Sunday, sweeping every key adult demographic and winning its time period, rating No. 11 for the week. In sports, Saturday's NCAA playoff game between Duke and Indiana ranked No. 10; overall, the Final Four outperformed last year's by 7%. NEW SHOWS DO WELL: Three new shows did well. Linda Lavin's new series "Room for Two" on ABC held its No. 7 spot in its second week on the air. Fox's Sunday premiere of "Stand By Your Man" ranked No. 61, beating NBC's new "Mann and Machine" at No. 72. NBC's latest try at a newsmagazine, "Dateline NBC," with Jane Pauley and Stone Phillips, premiered at No. 30 and won its time period. (End of package.) Advertising Editor: Ed Kelleher.
