Golf Links. Morgan had eight birdies en route to a 6-under-par 66. Phil Mickelson, making his professional debut, birdied his first hole and went on to a steady 68 to tie Steve Pate and Andy Dillard. MERRILL TO TALK TO VINCENT: Saying he has nothing to hide, former Yankees manager Stump Merrill Thursday agreed to meet with Commissioner Fay Vincent next week, without a lawyer. The commissioner's office contacted Merrill and asked him to tell what he knows about the George Steinbrenner affair. Also, Yankees general manager Gene Michael, who was told to find a new lawyer, did, and will meet with Vincent Monday. HOLYFIELD TO DEFEND TITLE: Larry Holmes, 42, faces heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield Friday night in an attempt to become only the third fighter to regain the undisputed heavywight championship. The only other two to do so are Muhammad Ali and Floyd Patterson. "He's a man out of his era - he's in the '90s now," says Holyfield, 29, unbeaten in 27 fights. Holmes says Holyfield still has a lot to learn. TWO WIN OLYMPIC DIVING SPOTS: Julie Farrell-Ovenhouse won the women's 3-meter springboard by a 76-point margin Thursday to claim the first Olympic diving spot. Karen LaFace won the second spot by edging Wendy Lucero-Schayes by 15 points. The men's springboard team will be decided Friday.
