KITE COMES ON TO WIN OPEN:
   Tom Kite overcame windy conditions Sunday to win the 92nd U.S. 
Open golf championship at the Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. 
Kite fired a par 72 to finish at 3-under-par 285, two shots in 
front of Jeff Sluman, who had a final-round 71. "I can't imagine a 
better feeling than this in golf," said Kite, who leads all 
golfers in career earnings, but had never one a major tournament.
    
ALLISON, ANDRETTI WIN RACES:
   Pole-sitter Davey Allison made the Miller Genuine Draft 400 his 
fourth victory of the Winston Cup season Sunday at Brooklyn, Mich. 
Also, Michael Andretti ended his run of bad luck by winning 
Sunday's IndyCar race at Portland, Ore., for the third consecutive 
year.
    
UNOFFICIAL NASCAR RACE RUMORED:
   An unofficial 15-lap race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is 
rumored to have been scheduled to conclude two days of NASCAR tire 
testing Tuesday. Indy and Goodyear officials deny the race will 
take place, but the "race" was the talk of the pits Sunday at the 
Miller Genuine Draft 400. Nine drivers are expected to 
participate, with the winner possibly taking home $90,000.
    
COURIER SEEN AS LONGSHOT:
   Jim Courier, ranked No. 1 in the world and unbeaten in his last 
four tournaments, begins play at Wimbledon Monday against Markus 
Zoecke of Germany. Despite his success, the No. 1 seed is a 
longshot to win because of his baseline style. Also, Monica Seles 
continues her search for a grand slam, facing Australian Jenny 
Byrne in her first-round Wimbledon match. Seles, the top seed and 
No. 1 women's player in the world, has won the Australian Open, 
French Open and U.S. Open in the past year.
