ALLISON WINS DAYTONA 500:
   Davey Allison successfully avoided a major accident on lap 92 
Sunday and went on to claim his first Daytona 500 in Daytona 
Beach, Fla. The accident, which took out the majority of the top 
contenders, happened when defending champion Ernie Irvan and 
two-time winner Bill Elliott squeezed out Elliott's teammate, 
pole-sitter Sterling Marlin, touching off a 14-car chain reaction.
    
LAKERS RETIRE MAGIC'S NUMBER:
   The Los Angeles Lakers retired Magic Johnson's No. 32 jersey in 
an emotional ceremony at halftime of their game with the Celtics 
Sunday. Jerry West (44), Wilt Chamberlain (13), Elgin Baylor (22), 
and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (33) - who are the only other Lakers to 
have their numbers retired - were on hand. Said Abdul-Jabbar: 
"Earvin made me realize I was having a good time..."
    
DUKE REMAINS NO. 1:
   Duke (20-1) beat N.C. State 71-63 Sunday and received 33 of 24 
first-place votes remain atop the USA TODAY:CNN Top 25 Coaches' 
Poll. The rest of the top 10 in men's college basketball: No. 2, 
UCLA (19-1); No. 3, Kansas (19-2); No. 4 Ohio St. (17-3); No. 5 
Arizona (19-3); No. 6, UNC (18-3); No. 7, Indiana (18-4); No. 8 
Oklahoma St. (21-3); No. 9 Arkansas (19-5); No. 10 Missouri 
(17-3).
    
BOBSLEDDERS FINISH SEVENTH:
   The U.S. two-man bobsled team of Herschel Walker and Brian 
Shimer fisnished seventh - the USA's best finish since 1980 - and 
Switzerland's team won the gold Sunday at the Olympic Winter 
Games. Also, Finland's Toni Nieminen, 16, became the Games' third 
triple medalist with a victory in the 120-meter ski jump. The U.S. 
hockey team, 4-0, faces Sweden, 3-0-1, for the A Pool
