Conlon, saying Commissioner Fay Vincent "exceeded his authority," Thursday granted the Chicago Cubs' request for a preliminary injunction that keeps the team in the National League East Division for now. The league should know within two weeks if the realignment is possible for 1993. That's when a decision is expected on an appeal filed by the commissioner. OLYMPICS BEGIN SATURDAY: The Olympics start with a splash this weekend. After Saturday's opening ceremony, a full schedule is under way in swimming and diving, soccer and baseball at outdoor venues, and in gymnastics, volleyball and men's basketball at indoor stadiums. The U.S. team's first shot at a gold medal may be from Jenny Thompson or Nicole Haislett in the women's 100-meter freestyle Sunday. DEFRANTZ MOVES UP IN IOC: International Olympic Committee member Anita DeFrantz of Los Angeles was elevated to the organization's powerful executive board Thursday by a vote of her peers. DeFrantz was appointed to the IOC six years ago. She also is a U.S. Olympic Committee member. DeFrantz was elected to a term that runs into 1993 and completes the term of former U.S. member Robert Helmick, who resigned. INDURAIN HAS LOCK ON TOUR: Barring a crash, Spain's Miguel Indurain will win his second Tour de France Sunday in Paris. Now, the chase is on for who will follow. Italy's Claudio Chiappucci is second, 1:42 back. U.S. rider Andy Hampsten is third, 8:07 behind. Thursday's 132-mile race was only the second pack finish of the Tour, with 122 riders crossing the line together in 5 hours, 7 minutes and 15 seconds.
