Diebel won the USA's first gold medal, setting an Olympic record of 1 minute, 1.50 seconds in the 100-meter breaststroke. The U.S. women swimmers won a silver and a bronze. In basketball, the USA beat Angola 116-48. U.S. WOMEN'S OPEN HAS PLAYOFF: Patty Sheehan rallied to tie Juli Inkster at the U.S. Women's Open Sunday, forcing an 18-hole playoff Monday. By making birdie on the final two holes at Oakmont Country Club, finished with a 2-under-par 69 to tie Inkster at 4-under-par 280 for 72 holes. Inkster also shot 2-under-par Sunday. Inkster, who has won 15 LPGA tournaments, is 4-1 in sudden-death playoffs. Sheehan is 4-7. INDURAIN WINS SECOND TOUR: As expected, Miguel Indurain of Spain won his second consecutive Tour de France Sunday. Indurain's victory, coupled with his win in the Tour of Italy, makes him the first man to complete the French and Italian tour double since Stephen Roche in 1987. Claudio Chiappucci of Italy finished second overall, 4:35 back; world champion Gianni Bugno of Italy was third, 10:49 back. FREE-AGENCY TRIAL TO RESUME: Freeman McNeil's antitrust suit against the National Football League goes forward Monday in federal court in Minneapolis after settlement talks collapsed during the weekend. The sticking point again: Length of service before a player could become a free agent. The new twist: A possible death blow to the idea of a salary cap pegged to the league's gross revenues.
